Packed Sound

1 July 2012

Electronics are packed for transportation and protection. After being unpacked, they are used for their original purposes. The running sound of an electronic product represents the function of the product and it is accepted as a daily noise. I let this sound work not in its usual way, in other words, I turn on the electronic product while it is still packed in the box.

I don't separate the electronic product from its packaging because I see the product and its box as a combined sound object. The sound object consists of a body which generates sound and a small space for the body. The generated sound from the body is reflected, bent, and absorbed in the internal space and makes a sound mass shaped like the box. I call this sound Packed Sound. For me, the structure of Packed Sound is a different way to perceive everyday sound and a basic unit to make a sound installation which has an extended meaning.
