Smartphones provide smart environments for people nowadays. When people have smartphones in their hands, they can access necessary information at any time and in any place, without any difficulty. They can also communicate with many people in a variety of ways, such as through telephone calls, text messages, and social networking services. Moreover, they can even control physical objects around them with smartphones. However, there is also a dark side to the convenience of smartphones. Even though smartphones were originally meant for the purpose of communicating, in reality they often obstruct communication. In addition, people live their lives as though they are being pursued because they receive too much information from their smartphones. As a consequence, people are losing their ability to stay upon one thought for a long time, which in turn endangers their uniquely human ability to think deeply. It seems that people are losing their way in life and wandering frantically from place to place.

Unsmart Phone Orchestra is a new orchestra using smartphones that are no longer smart. An unsmart phone is a smartphone which is turned around and attached to a wall. Thus, through the unsmart phone, nothing is visible, nothing is touchable, and only sound can be perceived. Fundamentally, sound occurs between two points in time. Therefore, hearing sound is only possible when a listener stays continuously between those points in time. Hence the structure of the unsmart phone only allows people to hear a sound continuously. Each unsmart phone has a different ringtone. A ringtone is a type of functional sound which informs the recipient of an incoming call or message. In the new orchestra, the ringtones aren’t recognized as information, but as sound itself. As a result, the audience at the scene can participate in playing the unsmart phones through the medium of numbers on the sheet music, which enables them to have a process experience rather than to have a fragmented experience as usual.
